BTC Clean Counter (“the app”) is a free recovery support app provided by Breaking the Chains (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what data the app handles and why. We built the app to keep as much as possible on your device, and to collect the minimum needed for its social features.
The short version
- You can use the whole core app anonymously — no name, email, or account needed.
- Your emergency contacts, your “I’m struggling” message, your photos, and your personal “why” never leave your phone. We never upload them.
- If you choose to connect with other people in the app, a small amount of data (a handle, your clean date, your daily check-ins) is stored on our server so your chosen people can see it.
- We do not sell your data, show ads, or use third-party analytics or tracking.
- You can delete everything at any time from Settings → Delete account.
What stays only on your device (never uploaded)
- Emergency (“I’m struggling”) contacts and the message you send them.
- Photos you add (profile, your “why”, home background).
- Your personal “why” note.
- Your clean date and app settings (these also sync to the server only if you connect with people — see below).
We treat recovery information as sensitive. When in doubt, the app keeps data local.
What we store on our server (only if you connect with people)
The social features (“your people”, check-ins, milestone alerts) need a backend. If you use them, we store, on our hosted database (Supabase, in the EU — Ireland):
- A handle you choose (and an optional display name).
- Your clean date (so milestones can be calculated).
- Your daily check-ins — a status (e.g. “I’m good”, “Need support”) and an optional short note (max 60 characters).
- Your connections — who you’ve mutually agreed to share with.
- An optional email address, only if you add one for account recovery.
- A device push token, so we can send you notifications.
You are anonymous by default — an account is created without any personal details unless you choose to add an email.
How we use it
- To run your counter and show milestones.
- To show your status and check-ins to the people you have connected with.
- To notify your people when you reach out (“I’m struggling”), mark “Need support”, or hit a milestone — and to send a gentle nudge if you’ve been quiet (a safety net you can adjust).
- To send the daily quote and other notifications you’ve enabled.
Who we share it with
- The people you connect with see your handle, clean date, and check-ins. That is the purpose of connecting, and it only happens after you both agree.
- Service providers (processors) that run the app for us: Supabase (database and authentication hosting) and Expo / Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (to deliver push notifications). They process data on our behalf, not for their own purposes.
- We do not sell your data, share it for advertising, or use advertising or third-party analytics SDKs.
Security
Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). Our database enforces row-level access controls so that users can only read their own data and the data of people they have connected with. Sensitive fields (such as email and notification tokens) are not readable by other users.
Keeping and deleting your data
- We keep your server data until you delete it.
- You can delete your account and all associated data at any time in Settings → Delete account. This permanently erases your profile, check-ins, connections and alerts from our server, removes your account, and wipes the app’s data from your device.
- You can also request deletion by emailing warren.sigamoney@gmail.com. See our data deletion page for the full steps.
Children
The app is intended for adults (18+) in recovery. It is not directed at children.
Your rights
Under South Africa’s POPIA (and equivalent laws), you may ask to access, correct, or delete your personal information. The fastest route is in-app deletion; otherwise contact us at warren.sigamoney@gmail.com.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles data, we’ll update this page and its “last updated” date.
